International Humanitarian City raised humanitarian awareness at global simulcast event
Dubai, UAE; August 21, 2012 Under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace and Chairperson of the International Humanitarian City (IHC) HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the UN’s World Humanitarian Day was marked on Sunday, August 19, 2012. Dubai joined cities across the globe for a live simulcast celebrating humanitarianism and honouring those who risk their lives to help others in need.
Over 10,000 people gathered at the Burj steps in Downtown Dubai for the simulcast of the global World Humanitarian Day video and Beyonce’s new song ‘I Was Here’, a product that has been put together by a remarkable team of creative and production specialists who have donated time, energy and enthusiasm towards establishing World Humanitarian Day as a day of note and recognition. On this day, we joined forces to commemorate those who have lost their lives in the line of humanitarian duty and as well as celebrate the incredible commitment of people across the globe who give so much to humanitarian service.
Dubai joined communities and organisations in over 70 countries to celebrate the World Humanitarian Day. With more than 62 million people around the world in desperate need of humanitarian assistance, marking the World Humanitarian Day raised awareness for those whose lives have been shattered by conflict, famine and disaster.
Her Excellency Shaima Al Zarooni, Chief Executive Officer of the IHC, said: “We are honoured to have the support of UN Messenger of Peace and Chairperson of the International Humanitarian City (IHC) HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein and would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for Her continuous dedication and compassion towards humanitarian causes and needs. Thanks to the vision and boundless kindness of our leaders, Dubai has become the biggest humanitarian hub for distributing humanitarian aid."
Her Excellency added: “We are pleased to do our part in raising awareness and to show our deepest thankfulness alongside New York and Geneva, being an ideal location to raise awareness for humanitarian causes. Also I would like to extend my sincere gratefulness to the UAE Expo 2020 bid Higher Committee, Emaar Properties PJSC, Dubai One TV and Dubai Media Incorporated for their support and valued efforts enabling Dubai to send to the world a message that can’t be ignored on the World Humanitarian Day."
